Rehabilitation can be a transformative time in a patient’s life, but accessibility and consistency in physical rehab programs are often a challenge. To tackle this, I had the privilege of working with an incredible interdisciplinary team from Northeastern University , alongside researchers from MIT and Massachusetts General Hospital/Harvard , to develop 🦋Chrysalis🦋—a groundbreaking immersive VR experience designed to revolutionize rehabilitation!
With Chrysalis, we aimed to make rehabilitation more engaging, accessible, and effective. Patients are guided through their recovery regimens with a mix of structured training, progress mapping, and activity feedback. But what makes it truly special? It’s not just about exercises—it’s about the journey 🌟. Patients can select their rehab course and travel to stunning virtual destinations 🌴🏔️, immersing themselves in serene, meditative environments crafted to support both their physical and emotional recovery 🌿✨.
Each session is an adventure! Using immersive environments, patients see their progress brought to life as their efforts literally light up the environment around them 🌟. Whether it's through a lush forest or basking in a calming oceanside retreat, every milestone feels like an achievement worth celebrating 🎉.
This project was a blast to work on! I created the 3D models using Blender and developed the VR environment in Unity, blending detailed artistry with functional design. The current work focuses on knee replacement rehabilitation, but the vision is to expand into a general, adaptive, and accessible method for remote physical therapy.
Below are some screenshots of the environment I created for this project. I used Blender to make the models and Unity for the VR environment.
The team won Northeastern University's 2021 RISE Awards
Special thanks to Dr. Casper Harteveld whose mentorship played a huge role in bringing Chrysalis to life and for granting me the opportunity to work on his project.
